A 45 –year- old woman has been arrested by the police in Lagos for allegedly torturing an eight year old boy, tying his hands behind his back and dumping him in one room without food or water on allegation of witchcraft.
The suspect Charity Iheanacho a native of Agbaai, Oguta local government of Imo State and a resident of Animal Kingdom, a village close to the Seme border town in Lagos was said to have been in the habit of subjecting the eight year old boy Chinonye Iheanacho to inhuman treatment for sometimes now and this has been noticed by neighbours who frowned at her actions.
Commissioner of police Lagos Command Edgal Imohimi told newsmen on Tuesday that the woman had locked him in her one room apartment with his two hands tied behind his back and left to her shop but a Good Samaritan who on hearing the voice of the boy crying for help had contacted the police who rescued the boy from his confinement.
The complainant we gathered had alleged that the woman who is the elder sister to the victim’s father had sometime in 2016, came to their village in Oguta, Imo State and brought the victim to Lagos after promising to register him in school since the mother had left the father.
It was gathered that since then the suspect has always been maltreating and accusing boy of being a witch.
Edgal said, however, the ordeal of the little boy came to the fore when on May 9,the suspect used horse whip a.k.a Koboko to flog the child, inflicting injuries all over his body. She thereafter locked him in her one room apartment with his two hands tied behind his back and left to her shop.
The police said the boy was wailing and shouting for help, which made one Peter Aluku to call the police who broke the door of the house and rescued the child.
Edgal said the suspect would be charged to the Special and Sexual Offences Court as soon as investigation is concluded.
The woman in her own account said she took the action to suppress the boys witchcraft powers, explaining that the child had been behaving in a strange manner since she brought him to Lagos by destroying things in the house and sometimes he has been disappearing for days from the house.
She said she went to bring the boy because the father who is her brother had already told her about the boy’s strange behaviour, adding that he was possessed by Agwu (one of the god’s of their land) and they need to perform some sacrifices for the gods to leave him alone.
“But my brother said he has no money to buy the items to be used for the sacrifice and promised that he was expecting money which will be used to perform the sacrifice later.
“Because of this I have taken him to many churches finding a solution for him to be delivered but to no avail. They say he is a witch, in some night the boy will be behaving in a very strange way he will wake up and change to something, when I asked him what happened he will tell me that some demons always come to him, it will enter into him and make him to behave differently.
“When I asked him how does the demon look like he said it is a very big black object with big head. My brother it is not ordinary it is the devil’s handwork.
“When asked why she didn’t return him back to the father she said she had called the father to send money but he has not done so.
“My brother I have done everything I could even in school they said I should not let him come to school again. My brother I tie him down so he won’t run away,” she explained.
In a chat with the little boy, he denied all the allegations stating that she has been maltreating him in any slightest offence and explained that the latest cause of the problem was because his rubber slippers cut. He pleaded to be assisted to return back to his father.
Meanwhile, the suspect is being detained at the Seme border police station for more investigations.
